Galactic Recycling: the Hi Ring around Ngc 1533
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report the discovery of a new Hi ring around the S0 galaxy NGC 1533. The ring orbits at a radius of 35 kpc, well outside the optical extent of the galaxy. We have conducted N-body/SPH numerical simulations to show this Hi ring could be the merger remnant of a tidally destroyed galaxy. We find no optical component associated with the Hi ring. However, observations hint at Hα emission associated with the SE part of the ring only. The Hα is in the form of a few very small isolated emission line regions. The large Hi velocity dispersions (up to 30 km s) and velocity gradients (up to 50 km skpc) in this region indicate the Hα emission could be due to star formation triggered by clouds colliding within the ring.

Recycling of ghost galaxies : The origin of giant HI ring around NGC 1533
We propose that the giant HI ring recently discovered by HIPASS for S0 galaxy NGC 1533 is formed by unequal-mass merging between gas-rich LSB (low surface brightness: “ghost”) galaxies and HSB disks. The NGC 1533 progenitor HSB spiral is transformed into a barred S0 during merging and the outer HI gas disk of the LSB is transformed into the giant HI ring. We also discuss two different possibili...
متن کاملCO Observations of Edge-on Galaxies, IV. NGC 4565: Radial Variation of the H2-to-HI Ratio
The edge-on galaxy NGC 4565 has been observed in the CO(J = 1 − 0)-line emission using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope with an angular resolution of 15. We obtained a scan along the major axis for ±5′(±15 kpc) about the galactic center, and some scans perpendicular to the galactic plane. The radial density distribution shows a dense molecular gas ring of 5 kpc radius, which is associated with an HI...
متن کاملHI Spatial Distribution in the Galaxy NGC 3783
We have mapped the emission from atomic hydrogen at λ=21 cm from the galaxy NGC 3783 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Our main results are: a) the HI morphology is irregular and perturbed, gathered in three blobs apparently unrelated to the optical morphology ; b) the observed HI velocity distribution indicates a normal disk in differential rotation with a constant velocity out to a ...
متن کاملStar-formation in the central kpc of the starburst/LINER galaxy NGC 1614
Aims. The aim is to investigate the star-formation and LINER (low ionization nuclear emission line region) activity within the central kiloparsec of the galaxy NGC 1614. In this paper the radio continuum morphology, which provides a tracer of both nuclear and star-formation activity, and the distribution and dynamics of the cold molecular and atomic gas feeding this activity, are studied. In pa...
متن کاملYoung tidal dwarf galaxies around the gas - rich disturbed lenticular NGC 5291 ?
NGC 5291 is an early type galaxy at the edge of the cluster Abell 3574 which drew the attention because of the unusual high amount of atomic gas (∼ 5×10 10 M) found associated to it. The HI is distributed along a huge and fragmented ring, possibly formed after a tidal interaction with a companion galaxy. We present multi-slit optical spectroscopic observations and optical/near-infrared images o...
